CLASS TITLE: MECHANIC

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Transportation Manager, perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair of the District diesel, alternative fuel and gasoline school buses, vehicles and other equipment.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform skilled maintenance and repair of buses, trucks, vans, automobiles, tractors, forklifts, lawn mowers and other motorized equipment.
Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects and determine corrective action required to repair such defects.
Perform automotive electrical system inspection and repair work.
Rebuild, repair and adjust pumps, cylinders, control valves, motors and related components.
Make necessary repairs such as overhauling and tuning engines; adjust and repair transmissions; replace, overhaul and adjust bearings, ignitions and carburetors.
Reline, adjust and overhaul brakes; repair suspension systems, front axles and rear axles.
Perform safety check and operational tests on District buses, autos, vans and other equipment.
Assist in sanding and painting vehicles as required; perform welding and fabrication work.
Maintain preventive maintenance records and files; maintain records of time and materials used and other records as required.
Make emergency road calls as needed.
Rebuild and install specialized equipment; rebuild or convert surplus equipment.
Assist in lubrication, oil changing, battery maintenance, tire changing and other servicing of vehicles and equipment.
Order and pick up parts from outside vendors.

Perform body and fender repair; repair seats and rubber flooring in buses.

Attend workshops, seminars and in-service training programs designed to maintain competency levels or. licensing requirements.
Perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE:
Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline, alternative fuel and diesel powered motorized vehicles and equipment.
Safety rules and regulations pertaining to mechanical servicing repair.
Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Title 13 applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of children.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Proper lifting techniques.

ABILITY:
Perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair of the District diesel, alternative fuel and gasoline school buses, vehicles and other equipment.
Diagnose and locate mechanical and electrical malfunctions and defects in motorized vehicles.
Safely use tools, machines and equipment associated with the mechanic trade.
Diagnose and determine appropriate parts and repairs needed.
Perform arc and gas necessary to successfully perform required duties.
Prioritize and schedule work.
Work independently with little direction.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Maintain related records.
Respond effectively and appropriately in emergency situations.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and three years of journey-level heavy duty mechanic experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Class B California driver's license, a School Bus Driver's Certificate issued by the CHP and insurable by the District liability insurance carrier; successful completion of the First Aid examination within the first six months of employment.
