IU POLICE DEPARTMENT (UA-PD-IUBLA)
Indiana University (IU) Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.
- Completes all university and Indiana state law required training and receive necessary certifications to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of Patrol Officer - Intermediate.
- Assists experienced patrol officers and other public safety staff as needed to gain field experience.
- Upon completion of training and attainment of certifications, demonstrates ability to independently patrol (solo patrol status).
This position is posted at a
Foundational Career Level but may be filled at another level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at another rank. Please see the qualifications listed below for each level.
Patrol Officer (Foundational) Requirements: EDUCATION
Required - High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required - Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certification eligible upon date of hire
- Attain firearms qualification within 1 year from date of hire
- Attain university required certifications in CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc. within 1 year from date of hire
- Complete all required annual law enforcement training and attain required certifications as prescribed by Indiana state law and the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board (ILETB) within 1 year from date of hire

Patrol Officer (Intermediate) Requirements: EDUCATION
Required - High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Required WORK EXPERIENCE
- 1 year of law enforcement experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required - Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certified upon date of hire
- Current firearms qualification upon date of hire
- Complete and maintain all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by IUPD, Indiana State Law, and the Indiana Law enforcement Training Board (ILETB) upon date of hire
- Current and continued certification in university required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc. upon date of hire
Required - Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure
- Highly thorough and dependable
- Proactively approaches responsibilities
- Meets or exceeds acceptable performance standards
- Ability to utilize technology including computers and word processing/email/database software systems
- Demonstrated ability to perform specialized duties where specialized training has been provided and completed
- Ability to operate motor vehicle with due regard for existing conditions and potentially dangerous situations

Patrol Officer, Master (Mastery) Requirements: EDUCATION
Required - 3 years law enforcement experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required - Possesses a high degree of initiative

- Highly thorough and dependable
- Proactively approaches responsibilities
- Meets or exceeds acceptable performance standards

The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; ascend/descend ladders or stairs; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to lift and/or move more than 165 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and detect how far away an object is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Candidates that must attend and successfully complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Basic Training course for 15 weeks must do so within 1 year of the hiring date. This requires an initial commute to a training site for 1 week, as well as weekly stays at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana for the remaining 14 weeks. The candidate will be paid while attending the Law Enforcement Academy.

If you are currently certified as an active Tier I law enforcement officer or LETB equivalent, you may be exempt from the fitness assessment. Proof of Tier I certification may be requested to determine fitness assessment exemption.

Patrol Officer Entry (Foundational) - $71,739 annually
Patrol Officer (Intermediate) - $79,060 annually
Patrol Officer (Mastery) - $86,715 annually
