Job Description

Responsibilities 

  • Teach four courses per academic semester/year plus serving as an advisor.
  • Preparation of course materials in collaboration with the history department, including syllabi, homework assignments, assessments, and supplementary materials.
  • Administration and timely evaluation of classwork, assignments, and assessments.
  • Preparation and maintenance of student attendance records, grades, comments, and other required records.
  • Planning, evaluation, and revision of curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
  • Providing assistance and advice to students during free periods and before and after school.
  • Collaboration with members of the history department, the Upper School faculty, and the entire K-12 community.
  • Regular participation in professional development opportunities to maintain and grow expertise concerning new trends and developments in history education and in the subject matter.
  • Enthusiastic participation in the greater life of the school, particularly extracurricular activities as an advisor or spectator and chaperone.
  • Interest in fostering diversity, inclusion, and social justice to promote a healthy learning environment.
  • Be available to parents, students, administration, and colleagues outside the school day when needed.
  • Willingness to take on other duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree. Advanced degree(s) preferred. 
  • At least three years of teaching experience.
  • Ability to teach different courses and levels of history and a willingness to shift courses from year to year depending on the needs of the department and the school. 
  • Ability to manage competing demands and adapt to frequent or unexpected changes. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively and deliberatively with students, parents, faculty, and staff on a regular basis.
  • Ability to use effective class management techniques.
  • Proficiency with current educational technology.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Works in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a diverse array of contacts.
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment.
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
