Summary

As a member of the YWCA New Britain, and Childcare team, the School Age Assistant Teacher will work under the Team Leader, as a member of the YWCA staff team, by participating in the implementation of a program that provides a safe, healthy rich learning environment in the School Age Programs within the specified guidelines. The YWCA School Age program staff must enjoy working with school aged children. They are responsible for planning activities, ensuring safety of all children in the program, serving after school snack, interacting with children and their families, working independently as well as with a team, and creating an enriching, fun, and safe environment. The candidate must have a positive attitude and serve as a role model to participants in the program. 

Duties

� To participate in the development and implementation of the program that provides a safe and healthy environment for children. Carry out an active and varied, flexible program
� Learn specified supervision techniques and be a positive role model for staff and children.
� Cleans work areas (e.g. classroom, storage, worktables, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining an orderly environment.
� Coordinates program activities (e.g. games, art, music, homework, etc.) for the purpose of addressing the individual and/or group needs of children.
� Interacts with children in various activities (e.g. snack time, group or individual play, Homework Place, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
� Maintains various records and files (e.g. daily sign in/out log, food counts, incident reports etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, meeting operational requirements and ensuring accurate documentation as required.
� Participates in various meetings (e.g. staff development, staff meetings, etc.) for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skill/knowledge.
� Sets Up and breaks down summer camp-school area (e.g. opens/ closes designated areas, games, art projects, etc.) for the purpose of providing for adequate preparation for activities.
� Maintain all aspects of program site in accordance with YWCA policy, professional quality standards set by After School Best Practice Standards. 
� Work with Lead Teacher to follow policies and procedures that promote a safe, healthy, age appropriate and stimulating environment for participants.
� Positively promote the YWCA and YWCA programs within the community.
� Work with Lead Teacher and staff to address areas of parent involvement, staff training, and collaborative programming.
� Follows legal and ethical standards related to job responsibilities
� Maintain positive relationships with children, staff, parents, and co-workers. 
� Seek input from program participants of various backgrounds on program environment and program elements.
� Abide by the written policies, including the Discipline Policy, for all Childcare and Youth programs.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the SCHOOL AGE Coordinator or Director of Programs

Requirements

1. High school diploma.
2. Prefer 1-2 years? experience in program implementation and direct services to youth in an after school setting.
3. Minimum 18 years of age.
4. Must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate a rapidly changing environment.
5. Ability to relate well to school age youth, school personnel, and parents.

Nice To Haves

Other qualifications include:
� Current medical report signed by a physician is required at time of employment and every two years thereafter
� PPD Tuberculin test, STU Mantoux method, or chest X-ray is required at time of employment
� Required State Police/State Department of Children and Families background check conducted with satisfactory results.
� Current American Red Cross certification in Infant and Child First Aid and CPR. Medication/Epi-Pen certification and other requirements for the position.
