The primary role of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties including troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. The position involves executing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging samples, recording maintenance data, decontaminating, and updating patient information.
Responsibilities
+ Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
+ Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture blood drawing process and other specimen collections, such as urine or fecal, as required.
+ Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
+ Fully understand all physicians' orders.
+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
+ Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
+ Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperature.
+ Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow procedures specific to protocol necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
+ Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
+ Attend annual department trainings.
+ Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
+ Experience with venipuncture, customer service, and laboratory procedures.
+ Ability to draw blood and collect specimens from all age groups, including pediatric and geriatric patients.
+ At least 1 year of recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.
+ Experience with handling 30+ patient draws per day in a fast-paced environment.
+ Phlebotomy certification.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Customer service experience.
+ High School Diploma or GED.
+ Must have hospital experience or experience in a fast-paced lab.
Work Environment
The position is based in the Phlebotomy/Lab department at an extremely busy hospital with long hallways, requiring a significant amount of standing and walking. The work schedule includes Monday through Friday and every other weekend, with 8-hour shifts. Available shifts are 2nd shift from 2 PM to 10:30 PM and 3rd shift from 10:30 PM to 7 AM. Please note that no vacation or time-off requests will be accommodated during the contract period.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $18.50/hr.
